After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are male thieves, assassins and warriors from across the empire, each man sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years, and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Choal, challenging and exhilarating. But Celanea's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Choal Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.
Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My thoughts

With all the hype going around about this book, I had very high expectations about this book. This book didn't disappoint in the least. This book grips you attention from the first page and it never loses your attention though out the whole book.

The plot has a good pace and is very suspenseful. A lot of times I found myself sitting on the edge of my set wondering what was going to happen next.

One of the best things about this book is how the author wrote it in different POV. Even though the book mainly focuses on Celaena's point of view, it would change every now and again to someone elses point of view and that really brought depth into a lot of characters. I really appreciated that the author did that.

Another thing I really liked that the author did was how she wrote Celaena's character. Every character has to have a flow or else the character will some unrealistic. What Mrs. Maas did was instead of giving Celaena a flow that is kind of unnoticeable, like not thinking things though; she made Celaena, to put it simply, vain. Not the nasty kind of vain, she made Celaena want to be pretty and want pretty dresses, and that is something that I have not seen in main characters. That really made Celaena's character real to me. Don't think that Celaena is this shallow character, she’s not, she is so much more than that. She has all these different sides of her that was really interesting to read.

Another thing that really showed how great on author Sarah J. Maas is, towards the middle of this book I thought that the love triangle would be too much. I though it would take too much away from the plot and it would just be like every other love triangle out there. It's not, because it would have been way to much if the author wrote it where both guys admit to themselves and her that they like her, but what saved this book was how even though they both like her, only one admitted to himself that he likes her, the other one is in denial. I don't know how the love triangle is going to play out in the second book, but it was great in this one.

The one problem I had about this book was that I found the world building was lacking. The author didn't explain a lot of how the land looks; she explained about the politics and some of the history, she just didn't really explain how the different lands look.

However besides that, this book was great. It had everything suspenseful plot line, mystery, great characters, fantastic writing, and a wonderful romance.

This book got...

4.5 Butterflies
Beautiful, this is a great book.

Recommended if you like Fanesy, assassins, and mystery.

That is my review, I hope you liked it.
Happy reading

  1. I've been wanting to read this since I've read its origins were from FictionPress. It must be good since a publisher had wanted to publish the online writer's work.

  2. I just finished this a couple days ago and I was really, really surprised at how much I enjoyed it. And although I usually HATE love triangles, I didn't mind this one. But I want Celaena with Chaol :)
